Berkeley Half Marathon Ambassador, Round 2

Hello all!

Long time, yeah?! Just a quick update-I ran the San Francisco Half Marathon (recap pending!) on July 31st! Also, after a month long training program in the summer (hence the lack of blogging), I am officially teaching fitness classes! I love my job, but more on the later!

For the second year in a row, I scored an ambassadorship with the Berkeley Half Marathon!

This year, the race will take place on November 20th in (duh) Berkeley, CA. There are THREE distances to choose from: a half marathon, 10K and 5K. I am going to run the 10K this year, as I have never raced at that distance before! So, in the coming weeks I am going to be working a lot on speed an conditioning. Other runners have expressed their various grumbles challenges with the distance: too short to run at an “easy” pace, but too long to run at a 5K pace the entire time; however, I’m looking forward to trying something new! Who knows, as a middle-of-the-pack half marathoner/second-half-of-the-pack marathoner, perhaps the 10K will be my true calling! 😀

For those who are interested in running Berkeley with me, I have a discount for you! Use “BHM2016JAMIE” to save $10 off the half marathon or 10K, or “BHM2016JAMIE5K” to save $5 off the 5K. Hope to see you at the finish line!

Turkey Trotting 2015

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! To my local running buddies in the states, and to my comrades across the borders and abroad, I am thankful the sport of running has brought us together!

I personally had a fantastic holiday. My day started off in the wee hours of the morn’, 5 AM to be exact! Getting out of bed at 5 AM on a holiday does not typically classify as “fantastic” imo, but if ever there is a good reason to rise and shine before the sun, it would be for a run! I did not run, as I am still healing from a tendon injury, but I volunteered to pass out medals with the Berkeley Half Marathon at the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot! The two races partnered up this year for a special challenge: those that completed the Berkeley Half Marathon, 10K or 5K on November 22nd, AND participated in the Turkey Trot, would receive a special medal for their achievements.

SO! I spent the morning in cozy 35 degree weather (damn you, the inventor of ankle pants!), handing out the special bling to proud runners. While it is a super bummer that I cannot run right now, being around all the positive energy was infectious and rewarding. It made my day to see people thrilled to earn their medal! I finished working at the race around 11:30 AM, and made the hour drive back to SF to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner.

It is always hard to be away from family on a holiday, but I was at least able to have phone chats with my mom, dad and brother. Luckily, I will be seeing all of them soon for a holiday visit to Arizona!

Rich and I spent Thanksgiving evening in the East Bay with some of his extended family. I met a couple new people and enjoyed good food and wine, great conversation and plenty of pumpkin pie! Even though they are not technically my family, I was welcomed warmly as part of their own!

When we made it home that night, I fell in to the deepest food and exhaustion coma of my life! Tiring though it was, Thanksgiving this year was a day well spent.

How was your Thanksgiving? Any turkey trotters??

Berkeley Half Marathon Ambassadorship and The Giant Race

Now it’s time for some good news! Last week was a tough one, and I briefly recapped the events of a house fire in my last post. But life is moving forward, and I am happy to announce that I was selected as an Ambassador for the Berkeley Half Marathon!

BHA

The Berkeley Half is the sister race to the San Francisco Marathon. The race features a half marathon, 10K and 5K, and provides a running tour of Berkeley, including the UC Berkeley campus! I am very honored to continue to represent Bay Area running, and look forward to this new ambassadorship. It looks like there will be a lot of great opportunities to connect with local runners, whether it be hosting a fun run, or working an in-store event.

Just before I was selected for Berkeley, I attended one last event as a San Francisco Marathon ambassador, The Giant Race on August 23rd. The San Francisco Giant’s themed race features a half marathon, 10K and 5K, and all distances start and finish at AT&T Park.

I worked at a table passing out medals for the San Francisco Originals Runs Series. Medals were given to runners who participated in 3 running events this year: Bay 2 Breakers, The San Francisco Marathon and the Giant Race.

It was a simple task, but it was great fun presenting medals to the proud and excited runners. Even though I was not racing, I really loved being around the positive energy of the running community!
