The Oakland Running Festival is one of my favorite running events in the Bay Area. This year’s race is scheduled for this Sunday, March 22nd, but I wasn’t able to add it to my 2015 race calendar. However, I never wrote a race recap of my experiences running the half marathon last year, so I decided to write a brief review of the 2014 event in honor of the race tomorrow!
The Oakland Running Festival Half Marathon
March 23, 2014
9:15 am (yes that is right, if you run the half marathon you can actually get some sleep before the race!)
There are a number of distance options available at the Oakland Running Festival: a full marathon, half marathon, 5K or a team relay. I chose to run the half marathon and paid a reasonable registration fee in the ballpark of $95. Believe me, you get your money’s worth in this race!
It has been almost a year since I participated in the ORF, so instead of a detailed recap I will simply share some of my favorite photos of the event!
The Oakland Running Festival is a running event full of unique sights, sounds and an energetic crowd like I have never experienced before. The ORF takes runners on a tour of Oakland, and TONS people come out of their homes (and churches!) to support the race. The enthusiasm of the crowd is spirited and infectious, making for a memorable running experience.
I should also note that the ORF half marathon course is fast and flat, minus one steep hill at the very end. In fact, this was the first time I ran a sub 2-hour half marathon!

Running through fire
These things. More fire.

Hanging out with my #1 fan
The Oakland Running Festival is an INCREDIBLE event: lively, colorful, and energetic-like the city of Oakland itself. I’m sad that I won’t be there this year, but you can guarantee I will be back someday soon!
Good luck to everyone running tomorrow!
