At long last, I have returned! I spent 9 AMAZING days in Florida with my boyfriend, Rich, and our vacation was anything but dull: there were weddings, theme parks, tournaments, beaches, and Coronitas! Rich grew up in Florida and has not been back in about 2 1/2 years, so we had a LOT to fit in!
On Sunday, April 20th I ran 11 miles, packed and then jumped on a red-eye flight to the Sunshine State.
Popping bubbles…Getting vacation started right!
I didn’t sleep at all on the plane, but the trip passed by fairly quickly and we arrived in Ft. Lauderdale at 7:15 am East Coast time. I don’t know if it was from sitting so long after running, but when I got off the plane all of the muscles in my right hip were so sore! I was practically limping, and sadly this would affect all of my plans of running on the trip. It wasn’t until Thursday that I would attempt to run again, but I will get to that.
For our first day in Florida, we stayed with Rich’s parents in Coral Springs and caught up on rest. The following day we drove to Orlando to visit some of Rich’s friends. We were able to spend a day at Universal’s Islands of Adventure as well!
Harry Potter, so fun!
We spent most of our time in Harry Potter World, but still saw most of the rest of the park. It was a slow day too, so we BARELY waited in any lines!
My hip was still a little tense walking around the park, but finally by Thursday I felt loose enough to run.
Rich went to the University of Central Florida and wanted to show me the campus, so he gave me a 3 1/2 mile running tour.
Lead the way, Rich!
It was a pretty run, but hot and humid beyond belief! I felt fine immediately after the run, but I began to have increasingly more severe pain in my hip throughout the evening. I stretched and used the Tiger Tail but nothing seemed to relieve the pain.
On Friday we said goodbye to Orlando and headed back to Southern Florida. Saturday would be the most eventful day of the trip, as Rich had a jiu-jitsu tournament in the morning AND we had a wedding to attend in the evening. I was still really sore on Saturday, and it was becoming clear I probably wouldn’t be able to run any time soon. I’m in the middle of training for a marathon so I felt hugely discouraged, but there was nothing I could do about it. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and give it the time off it needs. And drink martinis.
Rich competed in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championship in Boca Raton on Saturday, April 26th and placed 3rd in his division!
He won his first match in 45 seconds:
He made it to the semifinals; however, his opponent caught him near the end.
But still took home a bronze medal!
After the tournament and some lunch with the ‘rents, it was wedding time…
…and we partied all night long!
Drinking martinis and being classy
On Monday we were able to finally hit the beach!
The sand and scenery were beautiful, and we had a blast…
…and a few Coronitas 🙂
On Tuesday, we had to part ways with Florida. It’s always sad to say goodbye to a vacation, but rent does not pay itself.
When I returned home, it was right back to work for me. I’ve been able to run twice and I seem to be much better! I’m sure it’s a strength issue, so I need to really focus on that. I haven’t made my yoga class for several weeks because of work (and vacation!), but it obviously needs to be a priority right now.
It’s been almost 2 weeks since my last post and I’ve got a LOT of blogs to catch up with. I hope everyone has had a great couple of running weeks, and I look forward to checking in with everyone!
